Peri-urbanization isthe process of economic, social and spatial change in rural areas on the urbanfringe outside urban core built-up areas as they change into urban areas. Peri-urbanareas are the most rapidly growing and most dynamic areas in Asian city-regions—nowgrowing by over 45 million people a year and consuming mover than 10 square kmof (mainly productive) agricultural land a day.
Asian Peri-urban areas are dynamic regions, offering land for new industry, jobs, and housing and hope of a better life torural migrants. But many suffer from urban sprawl, pollution, social injustice, and destruction of natural landscapes. Better peri-urban development iscritical to economic development, social equity and a quality built environmentin Asia.
As a contribution to Asian urbanizationstudies and collaborations among Asian universities and research institutions, this conference will critically examine peri-urbanization throughout Asia andsuggest concrete ways to improve planning and governance of peri-urban areas. The conference will address three main questions:
· What is peri-urbanization(including characteristics and size) and what are the driving forces ofperi-urbanization in the region?
· What are governance andadministration structures and processes of peri-urbanization?
· What are the consequences ofperi-urbanization and results of national policies and programs?
