Introduction | 简介

Regional design—the shaping of physical form— in the Anthropocene demands ecological literacy in order to heal the wounds of the past and to create more healthy communities for the future. Concepts about designing regionally with nature predated the emergence of the science of ecology. As Darwinian ideas about evolution and fitness spread, designers and planners began applying biological theory—among them, Patrick Geddes, Benton MacKaye, and Ian McHarg. The theoretical origins continue to evolve through bioregions, urban and landscape ecology, megaregions, and ecosystem services. The practical outcomes include methods for ecological surveys, greenways, and ecological infrastructure.

区域设计，或者说区域物质环境的塑造，在当前“人类世纪元”的背景下，需要结合生态学的理念来修复过去造成的破坏并同时面向未来创造更健康的栖居环境。 在生态学出现之前，在区域设计中结合自然的理念就已经被提出。 随着达尔文进化论的传播，设计师和规划者开始运用生物学理论，其中就包括Patrick Geddes（帕特里克·盖迪斯），Benton MacKaye（班顿·麦凯）和Ian McHarg（伊恩·麦克哈格）。 区域设计的理论来源在不断发展的过程中涵盖了生物区域（bioregions)，都市景观生态，大区域以及生态系统服务等研究领域。实践成果主要包括生态调查方法，生态廊道和生态基础设施的设计。

弗雷德里克·斯坦纳 Frederick Steiner

Frederick Steiner is Dean of the School of Design. Most recently, he served as Dean of the School of Architecture and Henry M. Rockwell Chair in Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin for 15 years. Dean Steiner was a Fulbright-Hays scholar at Wageningen University, The Netherlands and a Rome Prize Fellow in Historic Preservation at the American Academy in Rome. He is a Fellow of both the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, and a Scholar at the Penn Institute for Urban Research. Dean Steiner was a presidential appointee to the national board of the American Institute of Architects and was on the Urban Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board. Previously He worked on the Austin Comprehensive Plan (Imagine Austin) and on the campus plan for The University of Texas at Austin.

弗雷德里克·斯坦纳是美国宾夕法尼亚大学设计学院院长，教授。在此前长达15年的时间里，他曾经在德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校担任建筑学院院长和建筑系主任。斯坦纳院长曾是荷兰瓦赫宁根大学的学者，和罗马美国学院历史保护罗马奖研究员。他同时担任美国景观建筑师协会和景观建筑教育者委员会的研究员，是宾夕法尼亚大学城市研究学院的学者。他曾是总统任命的美国建筑师协会全国委员会委员，也曾任职于国家公园管理系统顾问理事会的城市委员会。他曾参与奥斯汀综合规划以及德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校的校园规划。
