The theme of 2012 Summer School is:

NEXTEcological Intervention for Shanghai Historical Li-Long Housing

Li-Long housing is considered the most representative local residential building type of Shanghai. As a symbol of the City Shanghai, with the emergence of successful projects like Xin Tiandi,Tian zifang etc. in recent 10 years, Li-Long housing is becoming a popular hot issue on preservation and revitalization of local urban heritage, playing rather important role in the process of Shanghai urbanization. Most of Lilong housing, however, is in bad condition. On the one hand, the existing housing structures are decayed, the existing equipments are so poor that cannot meet the growing living request.of local residents; on the other hand, self-updating system of housing  can’t start due to the over-high density of population and serious social conflicts .These problems caused Li-Long housing gradually as obstacles in urban development and heritage preservation..

In this case, as the platform of international exchanges and cooperation, the 2012 CAUP summer school tries to explore the strategies and practices on preservation and ecological revitalization of historical Lilong housing in Shanghai, and studies the possibility of future development. It will raise contemporary architects to consider more aspects on social, economical , cultural, architectural and technological value of urban sustainable development deeply.

In collaboration with Urban Planning Bureau of Shanghai Hong Kou District, CAUP has carefully selected a typical Li-Long housing block in the Hong Kou District which still keeps main characteristics of old Lilong housing neighbourhood as a real study sample for 2012 Summer School program, and participants are encouraged to develop open-mind discussion based on the following three pairs of problems:

l         Homogeneous urban texture vs deteriorative physical environment

l         Compact and orderly space of neighborhood vs complex and chaotic residential environment

l         Historical value of architecture vs sustainable progress of modern life

The aim of this issue is to explore a model of Li-Long housing quarters through ecological intervention ,it should meet three criterion:

1) The proposal should highlight one’s imagination. Endeavors to solve realistic sustainable problems at all levels (social, historical, environmental, economic, etc) with an Utopian open mind will be encouraged.

2) Think Global, act Local. Participants are to deal with sustainable development, a growing global concern, at the local level, by responding creatively to the local climate, urban fabric, and social culture as well.

3) Experiment on new technologies while optimizing the existing ones, and integrating them with sustainable ecological elements .

In short, 2012 CAUP Summer School offers every participants an unique opportunity to meet and communicate, and develop their innovative strategies together on preservation and renovation of Li-Long housing in Shanghai.

We are looking forward to meeting qualified participants in Shanghai.
