Designing structures

in the digital age

在数字时代设计结构

讲座简介

Designing structures means bringing materials into form. Manufacturing processes provide the crucial link between material and form, and the balance between these elements is driven not only by technological progress but also by broader cultural and social developments.

Throughout history, advances in construction have emerged from the interaction between material innovation, structural knowledge, and fabrication techniques. Each era has developed its own architectural and structural language. Over the past 25 years, architecture and structural design have undergone another profound transformation. Beginning with the freeform architectures of the early 2000s, digital design tools enabled entirely new geometries and spatial concepts, while simultaneously challenging conventional construction methods and demanding new approaches to engineering and fabrication.

Today, advances in robotic, additive, and digitally controlled manufacturing are transforming the relationship between material, process, and form once again. The lecture presents selected projects and current developments in digital fabrication and highlights the importance of a holistic approach to structural design that integrates material behaviour, manufacturing processes, and architectural expression.

主讲人

Harald Kloft

Prof. Dr.-Ing

Director of the Institute of Structural Design

Spokesperson of the DFG Collaborative Research

Center TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction

Harald Kloft is Professor of Structural Design at TU Braunschweig, Germany. As co-founder of the structural engineering practice Office for Structural Design (OSD), he has extensive experience in the realization of outstanding building and infrastructure projects, many of which have received prestigious awards.

As Director of the Institute of Structural Design (ITE), he conducts research together with his colleague Norman Hack on advanced digital fabrication technologies for innovative structural systems and designs. An integrated understanding of material behaviour, structural design, manufacturing processes, as well as sustainable and circular construction principles, forms the basis of his work.

He has published extensively on both construction practice and research in numerous international publications. Since 2020, Harald Kloft has served as spokesperson for the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC), jointly operated by TU Braunschweig and Technical University of Munich.
