The current state of post-waste materiality remains undefined. In order to achieve net-zero waste and emissions, it is imperative to reassess the extractive processes of the Technosphere. Designers can identify potential intervention points by analyzing material flows within a city, thus creating new urban metabolisms. Robotic 3D printing in construction allows for the large-scale fabrication of customized and bespoke building conponent, which is particularly beneficial when dealing with heterogeneous or variable materials such as waste. Extrusion-based processes integrate numerous complex and non-linear interactions, including the rheological properties of the material, curing and shrinkage behavior, and structural performance. It is challenging to negotiate these intricate relationships for new materials where there is little to no tacit knowledge, but it is essential to enable scale-up.

Bartlett, UCL

Jingyuan also known as Yaoyao is an award-winning interdisciplinary designer who studied interior architecture design at California College of the Arts in the USA. She subsequently obtained her MArch degree in Bio-Integrated Design from The Bartlett, UCL. Following her graduation, Jingyuan was recognized as a UK Global Talent and continued her research career at The Bartlett. Currently, she works as a robotic technician at B-made and teaches Bio-ID Year 2, with a particular focus on circular design strategies.

Jingyuan has contributed to the material and fabrication development of the Calcareous Arabesque project, which was exhibited at the Design Museum in London. This experience led to her co-authoring a research manuscript on the utilization of sugar-refining waste, which was awarded best mini-Symposia paper at the 2022 ICSA conference in Denmark.a College of the Arts in the USA.
