As global urban systems undergo profound restructuring, the interplay of climate change, social polarization, and technological transformation presents unprecedented challenges to the future of cities. With changes in population structure and the intensifying trend of urban shrinkage, how can cities regenerate economically, ecologically, and socially? In an era shaped by artificial intelligence and digital design, how can we reconcile technological rationality with humanistic care? As the urgency of climate resilience collides with long-term economic sustainability, how can cities achieve equilibrium between immediate adaptation and enduring growth? When spatial inequality and socio-economic fragmentation define the urban condition, how might architecture and urban planning disciplines cultivate new methodologies and interdisciplinary collaborations to respond? In response to these critical questions, the Forum topic on “Reshaping Frontier of Future Cities”, hosted by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, convenes deans and scholars from five leading global institutions—University of Pennsylvania, National University of Singapore, Tongji University, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The forum explores two interrelated themes: Scientific Foundations for Future Ecologies; Interdisciplinary Frontiers and Architectural Culture. Through discussions ranging from ecological planning and intelligent design to healthy city science, architectural culture, and spatial innovation, the participants collectively reimagine the pathways of urban transformation, offering theoretical insight and forward-looking perspectives for the sustainable and inclusive cities of tomorrow.”

Professor Frederick Steiner's connection with Chinese architecture traces back to the iconic figures Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng. In his lecture, he systematically expounded on the academic core and practical paradigms of his strategic framework In Principle & Practice. Centered on the translational nature of design, this framework advocates that the design discipline should translate theories and methodologies into actionable capabilities for solving real-world problems, and further break through traditional disciplinary boundaries through interdisciplinary collaboration to build an innovative ecosystem. Integrating the four strategic goals of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design—designing healthy cities, promoting interdisciplinary innovation, advancing climate action plans, and facilitating cultural exchange—Professor Frederick Steiner conducted an in-depth analysis of empirical research cases from places such as Shanghai, New York, the New Jersey coast, the Arizona desert, and Dakar, Senegal, as well as the practical achievements of the Venice Architecture Biennale. His discussion revealed the key role of interdisciplinary design education in addressing global challenges, and provided a Penn model with theoretical depth and practical value for the transformation of knowledge production and educational models in the design discipline.

Heng Chye Kiang

Deputy Dean and Provost’s Chair Professor, College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore

Integrating Science and Design: Foundations for Future Habitats

Professor Heng Chye Kiang took Singapore's urban planning and public housing policies as empirical cases to systematically analyze how scientific rationality and design thinking can collaboratively shape livable cities. Starting from three dimensions of Singapore's urban development since the 1960s—industrial space evolution, industrial park transformation, and public housing planning—Professor Heng Chye Kiang, integrating innovative strategies such as intensive land use, industry-academia integration layout, and circular economy industrial clusters, revealed the core role of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex urban issues. For instance, Singapore has improved land use efficiency through industrial spaces going upstairs and underground infrastructure development; meanwhile, the mixed-space utilization and industrial white site policies have promoted the dynamic integration of technology corridors and university resources. Professor Heng Chye Kiang emphasized: The design of future habitats must be data-driven, but ultimately return to humanistic care—science defines boundaries, and design creates value. This lecture provided a Singaporean paradigm for interdisciplinary urban research, and holds significant reference value for planning practices in the context of China's new-type urbanization.

Félix Solaguren-Beascoa de Corral

Director and Professor, Barcelona School of Architecture, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña

Ways of seeing

Professor Félix Solaguren-Beascoa de Corral argued that architects must balance theoretical rigor, research-driven experimentation, and professional context to achieve transformative design. Drawing on Barcelona’s adaptive reuse of Catalan vaulting techniques, he demonstrated how historical craftsmanship can inspire structural innovation, while detailing his team’s Memory FOAM methodology—which embeds site-specific histories into biodegradable materials for temporary installations, merging ecological ethics with cultural memory. Critiquing education’s focus on visual formalism, he advocated training multisensory observers through tactile material studies, acoustic analysis, and temporal documentation of spaces. His Smart City Lab projects illustrated how algorithms can optimize urban sustainability while preserving community identity, emphasizing that architects must act as historians, engineers, and poets: deconstructing problems with theory, finding solutions through research, and infusing them with humanity through practice. The lecture envisioned a future where architecture bridges past and future, individual and collective, through spaces that are both intellectually profound and emotionally resonant.

Evan Douglis

Dean and Professor, School of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Accelerating Towards Abundance: Planetary Strategies in the Era of the Anthropocene

Professor Evan Douglis redefined architecture’s role amid ecological collapse. Arguing that the Anthropocene demands a paradigm shift from extraction to regeneration, Douglis proposed planetary-scale design—leveraging biotechnologies, carbon-negative materials, and decentralized energy grids to transform buildings into active agents of ecological restoration. He highlighted his lab’s research, where mycelium-based composites enable self-healing infrastructure and carbon sequestration, alongside New York State’s Climate-Resilient Communities initiative, which uses modular hydraulic systems to dynamically adapt to extreme weather. Rejecting notions of abundance as infinite consumption, he framed it as a closed-loop resource economy and equitable social redistribution, achieved through ethical innovation. Backed by rigorous data models and experimental prototypes, the lecture outlined a transformative path for architecture: embedding design within planetary metabolic systems to achieve a sustainable, regenerative future.
